REBA TOCHTERMAN
March 1, 2007
Reba Dene Gillis Tochterman
Our Mississippi Belle went home to her Lord Thursday, March 1,
2007. Her southern charm, genteel manners, practical approach to
all pertinent matters, and ability to organize all she took on,
which at times was considerable, is sorely missed. It was a joy
to her to do what needed to be done.
Reba Dene Gillis was born October 13, 1920, in Philadelphia,
Mississippi and was the oldest of three daughters of Judge J.K.
and Zelma Gillis. She grew up among the magnolias and developed
a lifelong love of all blossoms and gardens. After graduating
with a degree in home economics from Mississippi State College
for Women in 1942, she taught at Black Jack School in
Mississippi for eighteen months until she felt her job was to
help the war effort.
Reba worked first for the War Department in Aberdeen, MS as an
ordinance inspector for 40mm shells, then spent the last two
years of the World War II working as a chemist for Cities
Service in Lake Charles, LA manufacturing butadiene to be made
into tires for military vehicles. As the war was winding down,
it was in Lake Charles where love at first sight hit her when
she met Alfred Brill Tochterman, a tall, handsome sailor who was
home from the war. They were married Aug. 11, 1946 in
Philadelphia, then settled in Edna, TX where Brill returned to
his job with Mobil Oil.
She taught home economics and started her family with three boys
who were, as Miss Reba would say, “full of life.” Thirteen years
later, Mobil sent them to Tatum, NM where they were overjoyed
with the family addition of a daughter with the voice of an
angel. A year later, Mobil saw fit for them to make Andrews
their home.
Reba taught fourth grade at Underwood Elementary where some of
her immigrant students learned a more genteel English with a
distinctive southern resonance. As she trotted from ball games
to Cub Scouts to singing lessons to art classes to church
suppers and Women’s Missionary Union activities, Reba kept it
all in stride because she was a born organizer. A lifelong
Methodist, her talent lay in recognizing what needed to be done
and her mission was getting things done. From canning a hundred
cans of tomatoes to preparing 125 chickens in a day from coop to
freezer, to recruiting choir members when the church choir loft
looked a little lean, to finding a school in El Paso that needed
help, funds and encouragement, to taking the altar flowers from
Sunday services to the shut-ins and nursing home residents, Reba
always looked at the practical side of life (“Those flowers just
sit there and die in the church – they need to be spread around
and enjoyed,” she declared).
After retirement she would travel to many of the places she
loved to teach about, delivered Meals on Wheels, taught at
Andrews Literacy Program, was active in Daughters of the
American Revolution, and led the Andrews Retired Teachers. She
possessed the requisite excellent cooking skills of all southern
belles, and when she did sit down, she read, sewed, worked on
genealogy, or painted. And she loved to tell a good story.
Reba was preceded in death by both her parents and two younger
sisters, Wilda and Mildred. She is survived by her husband,
Brill; her children: Al and Sandy Tochterman of Midland, John
Tochterman of Andrews, Jerry and Cindy Tochterman of Andrews,
and Lucy and Jim Bourland of Las Vegas, NV; six grandchildren:
Trey Tochterman of Midland, Trevor Tochterman and Jerred
Tochterman of Lubbock, Judd Tochterman of Austin, Emily Bourland
of La Crosse, WS, and Katie Bourland of Las Vegas, NV; and her
caretaker, Susie Jimenez of Andrews.
Services will be Saturday March 3 at 2 pm at McNett Funeral
Home. The Tochterman Family requests that memorials be made to
Friends of the Andrews County Library, Home Hospice (803 N.
Main, Andrews), or Alzheimer’s Association (Midland, TX). |
