ESTAVANKO CEMETERY at NITRA

The Estavanko Cemetery was established by the Slovak Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic Diocese. Property was purchased and/or donated to the church, by Ralph Spencer through Father Francis Janiscek as the representative for the church.

Per the wording in this documentation, it states that the property set aside is to be used exclusively for "church, school and cemetery purposes only". In the early 1990's this property was transferred from the Bishop of the Atlanta Catholic Diocese, to an individual for the sum of $1.00, and has since been resold.

The first burial occurred in 1909 with the death of Joseph Estavanko, the son of Jacob and Mary (Czimar) Estavanko.

The last burial, to date, was in 1972 with the passing of Mary (Majda) Estavanko.

There will also be other family members interred in this cemetery in the future as well.

* An error occurs on the headstone of Mary Timan. The dates upon her stone indicate she was 102 years old at the time of her death.
Documentation supports the fact that she was 122 years of age at her death.
The error was made when the man assigned to carve the stone and a family member decided she could not be so old so they shaved off 20 years from what was provided to them.

* Also, the original name was spelled ISTVANKO by brothers Jakop and Pavel. This is how it was spelled and used when they arrived from Austria Hungary. They hailed from the city of Kocise which clearly points to the family being Slovak and not from the Czech Republic.

They changed the spelling of their first names to Jacob and Paul and also their last name began to be spelled as it sounded to them.

Jacob and his family used the spelling of ESTAVANKO while Paul and his family used the spelling of ESTVANKO.

Those buried within this Cemetery fit in as follows within the family:
