Perrine Matheny Matthews

Mrs. Perrine Matheny Matthews, age 88 of Rockmart passed away on Monday, September 27, 2010.

Mrs. Matthews was born on October 29, 1921 in Johnston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Charlie Matheny and the late Lila Mae Holland Matheny. She was a 1947 graduate of the Columbia Hospital School of Nursing of Richland County having been a registered nurse at the Columbia Hospital and later the Rockmart-Aragon Hospital.

As a devoted Christian, church and community was a high priorty. She was the first female elder of the Rockmart Presbyterian Church, was president of the Presbyterians Women’s Group and was a Sunday School teacher. For many years, Mrs. Matthews coordinated the local bloodmobile, was a den mother for the cub scouts, a member of the Christian Women’s Club of Cedartown and later in life, she was honored by Cherokee Presbytery for her Christian service and Polk Counties Woman of the Year. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Tyre Grigsby Matthews on December 23, 2000; five sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sudie & James Gordy of Rockmart; two sons and daughters-in-law, Henry & Debra Matthews of Rome and Tyra John & Jean Matthews of Rockmart; a sister, Helen M. Holmes of Johnston, SC; and a brother Jack Matheny of Johnston, SC. Six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Matthews will be held on Wednesday afternoon, September 29th at 2:00 p.m. in the Rockmart Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mary Ellen Hittel officiating. Interment services will follow in the family lot of Rose Hill Cemetery.

The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers: Michael Smith, Jim Evans, Bob Lawhon, Raymond Moody, Frank Plant, Marlon Briscoe and Brian Cross.

The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as honorary pallbearers: Ray Herndon, Don Tate, Bobby Gurley, Doug Randall, James Waits and Dr. John Atha.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, September 28th between the hours of 6 and 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Rockmart Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 226, Rockmart GA 30153 in memory of Mrs. Matthews.

Freeman Harris Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements for Mrs. Perrine Matheny Matthews.
