SPENCER WRIGHT AND ELIZABETH PREWIT
Spencer and Elizabeth Wright, along with their oldest son and his family, came to the Miles area in October of 1889 settling on a section of land they purchased southeast of Miles.
Spencer was the second son of Moses and Elizabeth Prewit Wright and was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Rutherford later became present day Cleveland County .
His date of birth is a little uncertain. His parents, in a letter of 1861, list him as born May 31, 1830. His grave-stone bears the date of May 31, 1829.
Elizabeth was Spencer's first cousin. She was the daughter of David Prewit, who was a brother to Spencer's mother.
Elizabeth was also born in Rutherford, later Cleveland Co. NC on March 3, 1831 according to her father's family bible. Her grave-stone however, has her birthdate as March 3, 1830. Her parents were David Prewit and Sarah "Sadie" Downs.
She and her entire family moved to Marion Co. Arkansas about 1849. They are first listed there in the census of 1850.
Spencer also moved to Marion County about the same time or perhaps a little later. He was still in Cleveland Co. NC as late as August 1, 1849 as records reveal he was baptized at the Pisgah Baptist Church there on that date. His parents were among the organizers and charter members of this church.
Spencer and Elizabeth were married in Marion Co. Arkansas on Oct. 2, 1851.
They had their first three and maybe four childen there and then just prior to the Civil War, migrated to Grayson Co., Texas settling near Pilot Grove where he ran a gristmill and cotton gin.
They were just getting settled when the Civil War broke out. Spencer enlisted in the 16th Texas Calvary (later dismounted) at Sherman, Grayson Co. on March 1, 1862. He was then 32 years old with a wife and five children. His service records indicate that he may have never left Texas. His regiment was in Arkansas in 1863 but the records show that Spencer was "sick in Texas". The April 1865 muster roll lists Spencer as "nurse Div. Hospital".
Grayson Co. deed records show that Spencer bought 17 1/2 acres of land at Pilot Grove, July 1, 1863. He must have been home on leave to do this as he was in the Confederate service at the time.
After the war the citizens of Whitewright asked Spencer to move his cotton gin there. He bought five lots there and moved his cotton gin.
An old map in the Whitewright City Office shows the location of Spencer's gin.
He owned other property there also as deed records show that he was given a grant of 160 acres from the state on July 29, 1871. He later sold one of his lots in Whitewright to a son, Moses Pinkney Wright, who also operated the gin for a while.
Spencer then bought a small farm between Celeste and Leonard . Hunt county deed records show this sale on March 23, 1885. However, he hungered for more new land, so he found the land being sold by the railroad near Miles. He and his oldest son, Silas McDuffy Wright bought a section ( 640 acres) southeast of Miles, paying $5.00 per acre. Runnels County deed records show that this sale was on October 12, 1889 and that Spencer and son Silas paid cash for the land.
Spencer and Elizabeth with their three unmarried daughters , along with Silas and his family, moved to Miles and began farming. Silas was one of the first farmers in the Miles area. The land then was mostly unfenced and was range land used primarily by sheep and cattle.
Spencer and Elizabeth needed a home, so he went to Ballinger to get a load of lumber. He caught pneumonia and died a few days later on February 3, 1890.. As Miles had no cemetery as yet, Spencer was buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger. His wife Elizabeth died the following year on April 12, 1891. Their tombstone, a large and sturdy granite marker, still stands.
