Farmers Academy Cemetery
Site Map

Farmers Academy is a large public cemetery located in the Farmer Academy Community in Southeast Titus County. A deed records that the first two acres of land used by the cemetery was sold and given by W. A. (Bud) Williams on February 4, 1918 for the burial of whites only and none other. This deed provides us with a pretty good record of the start of the cemetery in that it is referenced to the grave of Oleta Redfearn. The monument for Oleta Redfearn is the earliest one found in the cemetery and it is dated October 22, 1917. The cemetery is well maintained and appears to have ample room for expansion. A chain link fence surrounds the perimeter of the cemetery and an ornate cast iron gate provides the entrance to the cemetery.

Several devices were used to locate unmarked grave sites. The most interesting were the large number of funeral home markers (FHM) (22) that could not be read. On another FHM one could make out the name “Adams” but nothing else. Additionally, there was a fallen, broken marble slab with no inscriptions; ten (10) concrete slabs; a concrete block; six (6) square concrete posts; two (2) native stones; and three (3) bricks.

To reach the Farmers Academy Cemetery from the Titus County court house take West 1st Street west for 0.5 mile to the intersection with Ferguson Road (US 271). Turn right onto Ferguson Road and proceed 1.3 miles to the intersection with US 67. Turn left onto US 67 and proceed for 1.6 miles to the intersection from the left of county road CR1030. A sign announces the location is Farmers Academy Cemetery. The cemetery lies 0.1 mile on the left. Coordinates: 33o09.791'N 095o01.529'W
